FAQs

What can I expect at my first appointment?
At your first appointment we allow 45 minutes to go through a thorough history, examination and treatment (if appropriate). There are cases where other outside investigations such as x-rays, MRI or a visit to your GP are appropriate before beginning care.
What can I expect at follow up appointments?
Follow up appointments are typically fifteen minutes and will include a discussion of how things have been since the last appointment, any new developments and then a complete top-to-bottom re-check of what needs to be adjusted. We use a screening tool called a neurological protocol to check before and after every adjustment, every time to ensure that the correct thing is being adjusted.
How many appointments will I need?
This is tailored to each individual. At the end of each appointment we will decide together if, and when the next appointment will be. I will always make a suggestion as to what I think is appropriate and you can always change the appointment on the janeapp website if you need to. My goal is for things to work properly so that you can do the things that you want to with the best possible function and the least amount of pain.
So, what do you actually do?
We use a systematic method to screen and detect where the problem is coming from rather than just where the pain is. Most of the time when something in the musculoskeletal system is dysfunctional the brain is receiving conflicting information about that muscle, joint or connective tissue. In response, the brain will compensate by causing a group of muscles to restrict movement to protect the body. If we can stimulate the correct point to allow the brain to differentiate which of the signals it is receiving is the correct one, it will allow normal function of that joint/muscle group.
Does it hurt?
The actual treatment typically involves me putting my finger on the affected area and delivering a short, shallow thrust with that finger. Most of the time you could tolerate the thrust on your eyeball. The technique was initially developed to treat babies. You may feel some tenderness after the treatment. You and I will discuss this after each treatment and I’ll make sure that you know what to do help yourself if you have any residual discomfort.
Will I need an x-ray?
In accordance with the College of Chiropractors of British Columbia guidelines, we x-ray to rule out disease or serious conditions. We do not use x-rays to screen for posture. If we ask you to get an x-ray it is because we have concerns that not doing so would adversely affect your care.
What is your cancellation policy?
If you can’t make an appointment or need to change that is absolutely no problem. The website makes it easy to do so. I ask people to give me 24hrs notice where possible and I do charge the full fee for missed appointments. If it is within the 24 hours and you have an emergency, talk to me and we can work it out. I’m a reasonable person.
